Tracing Utopia is an odyssey into the dreams of a group of queer teens in New York City as they envision a better world. Directed by Catarina de Sousa and NickTyson, this short documentary imagines a form of queer community transcending time, through glimpses of a utopia made manifest in the streets, in community spaces, and online. A collaborative manifesto weaves these pasts and futures together — calling for the change that queer youth strive for today: “As queer teens in Queens, we demand this in order to build a better world.”
Catarina de Sousa is a filmmaker and producer of cinema and visual arts. In 2021, she founded with Pedro Neves Marques, the film and visual arts production company, Foi Bonita a Festa, based in Porto, Portugal. She is the founder of Casa do Xisto, an artistic residence that aims to promote connectivity through the cinema experience, based in the village of Macieira de Rates, north of Portugal. This project is funded by The Portuguese Institute of Cinema (ICA) in partnership with Mono No Aware in New York.
Nick Tyson (born in 1991 in the United States) is a filmmaker, editor, and producer based between Paris and New York City. Over the course of a decade, he has specialized in archival storytelling as part of the production team for non-fiction media projects – ranging from films and television series for HBO, WNET, and Discovery Channel to interactive media and mobile applications for museums and educators.
